Howdy,
If you are in Fort Worth this weekend, we are showing the new Julio Torres film “Problemista” at The Modern. Torres stars as an aspiring toy designer who will do anything to get his US visa, causing him to cross paths with Tilda Swinton. You may know Julio Torres from his HBO shows “My Favorite Shapes” a comedy special unlike anything I’ve seen or “Los Espookys” in which a group of horror lovers stage supernatural events. In the first episode, a priest hires them to stage an exorcism so that he can be the most popular priest at his church. You might also know him as a writer for SNL from his most popular sketch “Papyrus” starring Ryan Gosling as a man who can’t get over the fact that James Cameron used the infamous papyrus font from Microsoft Word for the “Avatar” logo.
Over at the Texas Theater, they are opening the new film “Sasquatch Sunset” starring Jesse Eisenberg and Riley Keough as two rather realistic-looking Sasquatches. This is supposedly emotional resonant, but I’m really not sure if I am going to be on the same wavelength as this. It has rather positive reviews.
Opening wide this week is the new Guy Ritchie movie “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.” I am always down for some Guy Ritchie action, and this looks like a cross of the “Kingsman” movies with Ritchie’s own “The Man from U.N.C.L.E” reboot, which also starred Henry Cavill. I’m pretty sure that Cavill took this role once he realized that he wasn’t getting cast as the new James Bond.
I have been trying out a ton of mobile video editing apps this week and have yet to find one that really works for me. I love using Final Cut Pro on my laptop, but sometimes I just want to make a quick fun edit on my phone. I tried Apple’s own iMovie app, which is more made for photo slideshows and can’t edit vertical video properly at all. They also make an app called Clips, which is supposed to be for social video, but it has almost no functionality. There wasn’t even a way to split a clip. There are many China-based apps which aim to copy the leader in the space, which is called CapCut. CapCut is made by the same people behind TikTok, so I’m sure every video uploaded to it goes into some overseas database. They also heavily push AI features and some garish stylized edits. Maybe editing on my Mac is the best option? Maybe Apple needs to introduce a mobile version of Final Cut? If you have any suggestions, let me know.

Yes! I tried to use iMovie to edit a simple music video, And was just completely frustrated the whole time!!! It seems like Apple has really dropped the ball (or Apple!) On this one! 😎
